What happens when you take Oxford’s brightest new MC solo artist’s most incendiary song and have it reworked by one of the underground’s most explosive rock bands?
“Look Out There’s A Black Man Coming (Rock Mix)” a download only single is the answer by Oxford’s Mr Shaodow & Smilex. A rap/rock re-working of Mr Shaodow’s original track “a satirical look at racism, from the eyes of a young black man.”
Rapper/Martial Artist Mr Shaodow has already been making a name for himself on the independent UK Rap scene with self-released singles like ‘Grime’ (now showing on Channel U) and his huge drive and self-determination. Smilex have a reputation of tearing up the toilet venues of the nation’s gig circuit with their stomping stadium rock music. With an album ‘7’ (produced by Ace of Skunk Anansie) and a string of EP’s (including a split with Young Knives), collaborations (2007’s ‘Dead Horses’ with MC Lars) and remixes under their belt, it was only a matter of time before unstoppable force met immovable object!
Mr Shaodow’s and Smilex’s worlds collided at the annual Oxford music showcase ‘The Punt’ and then again at a Love Music Hate Racism event. It was then that they decided to join forces producing a single both combining their musical styles and whilst they were at it raising funds for the Love Music Hate Racism who:
“Use the energy of our music scene to celebrate diversity and involve people in anti-racist and anti-fascist activity.” LMHR website.
It was a match made in heaven: The acerbic bite of Shaodow’s flow, driven forcefully by Smilex’s heavy rhythms, raucous guitars and boisterous chorus and like all the best rap/rock collaborations, “Look Out…(Rock Mix)” grabs you by the scruff of the neck and demands that both your head and feet pay attention!
“We first came across Oxford-based rapper Shaodow when we asked him to perform at the huge and successful protest against the BNP’s Nick Griffin and holocaust denier David Irving speaking at Oxford Union just over a year ago. It’s great he’s putting out a new version of his wickedly funny anti-stereotyping track “ Look Out There’s a Black Man Coming” in aid of LMHR, and we urge everyone to check out the track and help raise funds for the cause into the bargain”
